As the lead UX/UI designer at Hungryet back in 2018, I crafted the food delivery comparison platform from concept to launch. My focus on creating a user-centric design that simplifies choosing delivery services based on fees and times led to increased user engagement and improved decision-making.

Social Feature highlight

The social features(review system) can be break down into two parts. First half is feedback collection. And the second half is result present.

We also used a dark pattern that we put the cross out button into to the really left hand side so that user might just be easier to answer the quick surveyFor result collection process, we ask the user a question when come next time politely on the top of the webpage. Just big enough to get users to notice it and it won’t bother users using the site.

After we collected the feedback, we used them in ways, we have a live auto scrolling section on the left hand side showing what your friends just liked or most recent orders.

Then we use the data in the backend to prioritize the search result, and we break the huge list into three sections so users can use them with minimal Cognitive load.

Discover

Designing the Food delivery comparison website to search all website.

Hungryet aims to solve this problem by developing a proprietary technology platform that makes food delivery accessible to all consumers by providing robust, comprehensive, and personalized search and sharing capabilities.

Hungryet is comprised of two key components:

1. Meta research engine that helps the customers to choose ideal food delivery services.

2. Dynamic, real-time sharing via our proprietary technology platform.

Wait, why compare?

The market was extremely fragile. And they are new companies comes every day. And each one of them has a different profit model or operating structure. They charge users different delivery fees and delivery time is also different. That's why we compare.

I realized an opportunity to make a central repository of information that would combine all this fragmented information.

Background Research

Along the way, we also had many interesting findings as we talk to people in the industry, and gained a deep understanding of the food delivery market.  Back then, Ubereats focus so much on delivery time because they have a really mature driver team network. Doordash focuses on low fees. Bitesquad focuses on coverage.  Postmates focused on proving a one-to-one prime delivery experience.

The comparison feature can focus on comparing the delivery fee and delivery time.

Expert Interview

Delivery fee can vary because each delivery company has its own way of calculating delivery fees and runs on different profit model.

Feature Brainstorm

The app to search all app

We created a window to show all the important information and Bolded the important information so that users can see important information at a glance.

Distance isn't the only thing that affects the delivery fee. Some websites offer free food delivery services when a user's order reaches a certain amount.

Allowing the user to enter an estimated order account can overcome the second layer of obstacles to reach the ideal deal.

Develop

Information Architecture

Organize and label content in an effective way so that users find information and complete tasks easily.

User Flow

Paper & mid-fide prototype

Physical artifacts with rough sketches and process diagrams, including design options that didn’t make it to the final product.

Quick User Test with Low Fidelity Prototype

We had two layout versions for one workflow and tested with users. Key findings:

mid-fidelity prototype

  • The restaurant list should be brake down into three frames to reduce visual noise.
  • The food type filter is really necessary, it helps the user get to the ideal restaurant faster.
  • The social feature should be placed on the left side since most users are more comfortable and used to have the control panel on the left side.

Handing over to developer

High fidelity prototypes handed over to developer

Because this is a formal startup project, there are four engineers in the dev team, so the next step is to cooperate with them to ensure that the products can be officially launched. While working with the engineers I realize that is really important for designers to understand at least enough about the technology stack they’re designing; for that, we can have clear and useful discussions with developers about all the aspects of the product.

Another key thing is when collaborating with developers, I need to clearly communicate my designs through words and via software such as invasion and by making prototypes the developers can access and see my designs in motion.

When final work to engineers, I would create a folder with all assets and along with a sketch file. And then I like to use I called it behavior balloons in the sketch file to explain the micro-interaction and explain how the feature works. Sometimes when engineers have additional questions we would set up more meetings to answer their questions.

Retrospective

  • Test design ideas as early as possible and keep learning from users. When we're not quite sure about a design direction, asking the users can help us get the best answer for most of the time.
  • Know the design process, and also know it's iterative. Designing for the real world is seldom a straight line. I need to fail fast, iterate fast, and reduce my mental attachment to a solution or prototype.

Next Step

Measuring success

To measure success after this product being launched, there are a few key numbers we can take a look at:

• Conversion Rate: How many user we transfer to merchants site in certain amount of time.

• Member Signup Rate: How many users sign up for monthly subscription.

• Task Completion Time: How fast can a user complete a task

Business Value

We are on a mission to bring people together through food delivery, fun dining experiences and digital sharing. We want to make food delivery accessible to every budget, taste and time constraint.
